Super Bowl Shuffle This Is Not

You don’t have to be a sports fan to recognize this song is TOTAL CHEESE.  From the looks of it, the U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team got together and made an inspirational song and video for the 1990 World Cup and this was the result.  Nothing says teamwork like playing soccer on the beach without shirts while showing off their mullets and/or hairy chests, not to mention having an O.J. Simpson cameo!  Suffice to say, things didn’t work out so well for the Americans.  They finished 23rd out of 24 teams in the tournament.  Go U.S. Soccer!

Serving tendencies

As winter lurches toward February, there’s always the Australian Open to keep my mind off the cold.  For tennis fans, it’s probably the best televised tournament in the U.S.  Between ESPN2 and Tennis Channel’s live and tape-delayed coverage, there’s rarely an hour of the day in which the tournament isn’t on TV.  It is two weeks of tennis nirvana and it allows ample time to get a good look at players’ tendencies.

Take their serves for example.  It’s not hard to notice Andy Roddick repeatedly flop his sleeves or Novak Djokovic excessively bounce the ball before serving.  But have you ever noticed Rafael Nadal pull out his wedgies?  I was happily oblivious to his dirty habit until my brother unleashed a spirited rant about it.  Now I can’t unsee it.  Check the video and keep an eye out at the 0:12 second and 0:32 second marks for proof.

With a name like that, they better be good

Major League Soccer’s Philadelphia Union will be sponsored by Bimbo Bakeries USA next season.  The breadmaker’s parent company Grupo Bimbo is based in Mexico and sponsors clubs in Mexico and Costa Rica.  Bimbo’s deal as the team’s shirt sponsor means its logo will be prominently displayed on all team apparel.

I’m sure fans of opposing teams will come up with something crafty to taunt the Union with by the start of the next MLS season this spring, and I have no doubt it’ll be something better than the Philadelphia Bimbos.

I want to believe

Japan is bidding to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup.  Having already proven they have the logistic know-how in holding a major sporting event, the organizing committee is focusing its bid on 3D hologram technology.  That’s right, holograms.

Instant karma

One of the popular sports at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Games was making fun of Canada.  The Games’ organizers came under fire for the luge accident and technical difficulties at the opening ceremony, with the British press coming down especially hard on America’s Hat.

Considering this, England really made itself an easy target after unveiling their mascots Wenlock and Mandeville for the 2012 London Summer Games.  It’s nice to know that with the help of focus groups, the organizers decided there weren’t better symbols for children to learn about the spirit of the Olympics than a couple of one-eyed monsters.

You don’t need to be a fan of soccer or know who Cristiano Ronaldo is to laugh at this one.

Is it the way he fights everyday?

Being a Detroit Lions fan has been pretty rough for the last decade or two.  They’ve gone through more busts than Hugh Hefner and endured the first ever perfect winless season in NFL history.  Last year, the Lions got the No. 1 draft pick thanks to their ineptitude and selected strong-armed quarterback Matthew Stafford.  Although they’re still losing, he’s shown glimpses of his potential as a franchise quarterback this season.  It seems he’s finally arrived after his 5-touchdown performance against the Cleveland Browns, especially because he threw the game winning touchdown on the last play of the game with a separated left shoulder.  In celebration of his landmark performance, this little video heralds Stafford’s maturation into a man, or “The Man” in Detroit.

The only reason this video is being highlighted is for its excellent soundtrack (DVDA’s “Now You’re a Man” from Trey Parker’s and Matt Stone’s cult classic Orgazmo).  Otherwise, this video is eerily stalkerish.
